A couple living with their two daughters has been critically injured in a fire that broke out at their rented apartment at Athanur near Tambaram early on Saturday (December 28, 2024).
A senior official of the Tambaram Police Commissionerate said Senthilkumar and Kalaiyarasi have been living in the apartment for nearly five years now. While Senthilkumar runs a tailoring business in the apartment, Kalaiyarasi works at an anganwadi centre in the locality. Their daughters Monica and Diya are 20 and 15 years old, respectively.
At around 4 a.m. on Saturday, a fire broke out in the couple’s room when they were asleep. Trapped inside, they cried out for help. Their daughters, who were sleeping in the adjacent room, ran out of the house and alerted the neighbours, who then contacted the Manimangalam police control room.
The Manimangalam police rushed to the scene with a team from the Fire and Rescue Services and a fire tender from the Maraimalai Nagar fire station.
The couple, who sustained more than 90% burns, were rescued by the team and rushed to the Chromepet Government Hospital. They were later shifted to the Government Kilpauk Medical College for further treatment.
The Manimangalam police have registered a case and further investigation is underway.
