Periya twin murder case: 14 convicted, 10 let off

A CBI special court in Kochi has convicted 14 persons, including former CPI(M) legislator Kunhiraman, in the Periya double murder case. As many as 10 accused were acquitted.

The accused were found guilty of various offences including murder and conspiracy. He’s been convicted under IPC 225 for obstructing or resisting the lawful apprehension of another person.

Those who have been found guilty Peethambaran, Saji George, Suresh, Anilkumar, Jijin, Sreerag, Aswin, Sudheesh, Renjith, Surendran, Manikandan, Kunjiraman, Velutholi Raghavan, and A.V. Bhaskaran.

One of the accused named Surendran has further sought death punishment for him and said that he wished to end his life. The court said that the punishment will be decided on January 3, 2025.

The prosecution case was that the accused hacked two Youth Congress leaders Kripesh and Sarathlal to death on February 17, 2019. The CBI had arraigned a few prominent CPI (M) leaders including former legislator Kunhiraman as an accused in the case.

The Supreme Court had ordered a CBI probe into the killings after turning down the plea of the State government.
