Workshop emphasises need to prioritise protection of children

Prioritising protection of children in the light of sexual abuse cases reported against them was reiterated at a workshop organised by Karnataka State Commission for Protection of Child Rights in Chamarajanagar near here on Monday.

Superintendent of Police, Chamarajanagar, B.T. Kavitha, said ensuring safety and protection of children was everybody’s responsibility in society.

She was addressing the gathering at the workshop on ‘Protection and education of children in schools’ organised by the Karnataka State Commission for Protection of Child Rights along with district administration, police, zilla panchayat, Department of School Education, and Department of Women and Child Development in Chamarajanagar.

She emphasised the need to prioritise protection of children against whom cases of sexual abuse at a tender age were reported from homes and schools. Pointing out that children were born with rights, Ms. Kavitha said children should be allowed to experience childhood naturally.

Cautioning against subjecting children to pressure, Ms. Kavitha called upon officials of the department concerned to show compassion towards them and ensure that freedom was not snatched away from the innocent souls. They should rush to their aid if there was any indication of violence against them, she said.

Member of Karnataka State Commission for Protection of Child Rights, Venkatesh, who presided over the programme, emphasised the need for implementation of child-centered development projects to bring about development in the society.

Programmes related to child protection and their upbringing should be implemented efficiently with the involvement of one and all in society.

Mr. Venkatesh also said there was a need to create awareness about the laws and regulations on protection of children. The desired results could be achieved only when there was strict adherence to guidelines for all-round development of children.

Deputy Secretary of Chamarajanagar Zilla Panchayat, P Lakshmi, Chamarajanagar district child protection officer, Cheluvaraj, principal of Chamarajanagar District Education and Training Institute, Kashinath, and others were present.
