The Ashtami Chapparam drew a large number of devotees at Meenakshi Sundareswarar Temple on Monday.

The presiding deities – Goddess Meenakshi Amman, Sundareswarar and Piriyavidai – were drawn in the car by thousands of devotees. Starting from the temple early morning., they pulled the car through Adi, Avani, Masi and Veli Streets.

Ashtami Chapparam is celebrated in the Tamil month of Margazhi during the waning crescent stage of Ashtami. Goddess Meenakshi and Lord Sundareswarar are placed on a separate Chapparam and taken on a chariot pulled only by women

HR&CE officials said that it was conducted for the wellness of the people and that no one should starve for food on Mother Earth. Police made elaborate security arrangements. Despite showers, a large number of devotees participated in the event.
