Villagers of Narikkanvayal near R.S. Mangalam block in Ramanathapuram district demanding to release water accordingly from nearby kanmais without affecting their farmlands submitted a petition during weekly grievance redressal meeting on Monday.
They said that two kanmais of Govindamangalam and Moolavayal, which were near the Narikkanvayal village, during times of rainfall and release of water, gets filled up and overflows into their farmlands.
In previous years, when villagers faced similar problem, officials took steps to break one of the kanmais to release water without affecting the farmlands.
But, again, the bunds of the kanmais were raised to store more water. This move by the Water Resources Department has caused more water to plunge into the farm areas damaging standing crops.
To resolve the issue and find a solution to the long-pending issue, the district administration should make ways to release water from the kanmais accordingly, without damaging the farmlands nearby, villagers added.
