The Kerala Police on Sunday arrested Shamnad Thannithurakkal, of Perumbadappu, Malappuram, a notorious gangster and accused in several cases including Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA), from Uttar-Pradesh-Nepal border.
The arrest was conducted by the Thrissur police in association with the State Anti-Terrorism Squad. Shamnad is an accused in 22 cases, including attempted murder.
He was arrested in connection with a case registered at the Vadakkekkad police station in Thrissur. He had been hiding in North India and Nepal.
Shamnad is the main accused in a case in 2016, wherein he posed as a vigilance officer and decamped with gold jewellery and other valuables from a house in Perumbavoor. The case was later investigated by the Anti-Terrorism Squad, which filed a chargesheet. He was granted bail in that case. Shamnad, who later become involved in a case registered at Vadakkekkad police station, went into hiding.
Shamnad reportedly had close ties with a terrorist group led by Thadiyantavida Naseer. The police are investigating about those who helped him to hide. His arrest was based on confidential tip-off provided to the Anti-Terrorism Squad, according to a press release from the police.
