DGP reviews law and order situation with senior officers in Villupuram Range


Director General of Police and Head of the Police Force Shankar Jiwal on Saturday reviewed the crime and law an order situation and other activities of the police in Villupuram Range encompassing Villupuram, Cuddalore and Kallakurichi districts.

According to a press release, Mr. Jiwal reviewed and discussed various aspects of policing, aiming to strengthen enforcement in the region. He reviewed the progress in murder cases, robbery, dacoity and other theft. Specific instructions were issued to curb rowdyism; caste and communal issues; to increase the detection and prevention of crimes; provide support for victims of cybercrimes and implement effective measures to curb road accidents.

Special emphasis was laid on identification of accident black spots and their rectification in coordination with other stakeholders.

The DGP also directed the Superintendent of Police in the three districts to intensify action against rowdy elements and those involved in the illegal narcotics trade including ganja and gutkha, with specific instructions to freeze financial assets and the bank accounts of the offenders.

According to police, the Villupuram Range had registered 441 cases under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act (NDPS) Act against 718 ganja peddlers and seized 456 kgs of the contraband till November this year.

In addition, a total of 1,150 suo moto cases were registered by the police against gutkha sellers. A total of 11,194 kgs of gutkha were seized and 921 shops were sealed.

Mr. Jiwal also instructed the Police officers to strictly enforce the Tamil Nadu Prohibition (Amendment) Act 2024, introduced recently to combat bootlegging and smuggling of illicit spirit from neighbouring States. The three districts in the Villupuram Range had registered a total of 690 cases against illicit liquor and arrested 630 persons. Of them, the Bootleggers Act was invoked against 58 offenders.

The meeting also reviewed the progress of trial cases in various courts and instructions were given for proper production of witnesses and speedy completion of trial. Specific instructions were given to focus on long-pending cases.

The DGP also presented commendation certificates to 45 police personnel from the three districts for exemplary performance in detection of crimes.

Inspector General of Police (North Zone) Asra Garg, Deputy Inspector General of Police (Villupuram Range) Disha Mittal, Superintendents of Police R. Rajaram (Cuddalore), Deepak Siwach (Villupuram) and Rajat Chaturvedi (Kallakurichi) were present.
