Janaspandana programme held at Yadgir

0

Citizens of Yadgir city have submitted applications highlighting problems before Lalita Anapur, CMC chairperson, during her maiden Janaspandana programme held at Yadgir on Friday.

The majority of the problems were related to internal linking roads, drinking water, sanitation, improper dumping of waste, and defunct borewells. Few citizens have raised issues related to property documents and complained about applications seeking change of names in the mutations being kept pending.

Some explained the menace of stray cattle, which obstruct moving vehicles on main roads, especially at night, and also complained about mismanagement of streetlights.

After hearing citizens patiently, Ms. Anapur promised that all applications containing problems would be solved soon. Construction of CC roads and a vegetable market will require sufficient time. However, these projects will also be taken into consideration as priority.

The CMC will always be for the citizens, who should extend coordination for better civic facilities. Every citizen should approach the CMC without any hesitation to get the work done. As many as 35 applications were received, and of them, 20 applications were disposed of on the spot, officials said.

Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy defended the investments by Adani Group in Telangana stating that Telangana was ensuring money is coming into the State as investments while Prime Minister Narendra Modi was giving away the nation’s assets to Adani.

“Modi is giving money to Adani and Telangana was taking the same money from Adani,” he said in response to a question at a press conference in Mumbai on Saturday. The press conference was attended by Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhdev Singh Sukku, Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister D. K. Shivakumar apart from Maharasthra leaders.

The Chief Minister said Prime Minister Modi had made allegations against the non-implementation of poll promises. “However, when I explained the implementation of the schemes through a detailed post Mr. Modi deleted his tweets related to Telangana,” he said.

Telangana is the only State where the agricultural loans of 22,22,067 farmers were waived spending ₹17,869 in just 25 days, he said. Mr. Reddy said Prime Minister Modi had a problem with the Telangana government paying ₹3,500 crore to the Telangana Road Transport Corporation (TGRTC) for free travel for women while he doesn’t have any problem while waiving dues worth ₹15 lakh crore of the corporates.

Explaining the series of Congress guarantees that were being implemented in Telangana, he said women made more than 1 crore trips in the buses free of cost, 49 lakh families were getting LPG cylinder for ₹500 while 50 lakh households were getting 200 units of free power. Farmers are getting an additional ₹500 bonus for paddy over the MSP, which no other State was providing.

Referring to the Maharashtra sentiment, Mr. Reddy said people had read about the self-respect of the State under great figures like Shivaji, Ambedkar, Balasaheb Thackeray and Sharad Pawar but now the BJP has reduced that self-respect with a few leaders toeing the line of the BJP.

The biggest achievement of the Shinde-led government was Maharashtra figuring at the top in farmers’ suicides. Telangana was second on this list during the BRS government, he argued. Later, he participated in a roadshow in Mumbai in support of the Congress candidates.

Food delivery agents and dependents find it hard to get insurance claims cleared

0

Early in May this year, 42-year-old Ajay (name changed), a delivery agent with online food delivery aggregator Swiggy in Thiruvananthapuram, was returning after a delivery when he met with an accident. He sustained serious injuries including a broken rib. After a one month stay in hospital and two months of rest at home, he rejoined work recently to take care of daily expenses. But the company has rejected his insurance claim.

“I have sent my medical records from the Government Medical College Thiruvananthapuram as well as other relevant documents for the insurance claim. But the claim was rejected by the insurance company with which Swiggy has an arrangement. My team leader told me that I should have contacted the company’s officials online as soon as the accident happened. How is anyone supposed to do that,” asks Ajay.

In the case of Mahesh (name changed), the claim for an accident which happened during a delivery in May this year has not yet been rejected, but there has been no response from the insurance company. Although he had sustained serious injuries on his arm and head, he has managed to recover enough to rejoin work.

Food delivery agent and their dependents have been finding it increasingly hard to get insurance claims for injuries or death caused by accidents or other reasons. According to several agents that The Hindu talked to, their claims have been getting rejected for flimsy reasons.

22-year-old Ashwin, who used to be a delivery worker with Swiggy, died in an accident on February 23. According to his sister P.Aswani, the company initially rejected the insurance claim citing that he had worked only till January 20 and that insurance claims can be provided only for those who have worked within seven days prior to the accident.

“We went to the bank in which he had an account and got a statement, which showed that the last transaction from the company to his account was on February 20. There has been no response after we sent this particular detail,” says Aswani.

According to the delivery agents, the company changes the criteria for awarding insurance on its whims. In the case of a 19-year old delivery agent who died in an accident in October, the criteria stipulated was that the agent should have worked within five days, instead of the seven days cited in previous cases. The few cases where delivery agents have received money has happened through the constant follow up from the workers’ union.

The Kerala wing of the All India Gig Workers’ Union is planning to go on a protest soon citing various issues, including the rejection of insurance claims. Delivery agents say that the rates have not been increased in the past few years despite the increase in fuel costs. The company officials were not available for comment.

Ponnam criticises BJP leader Laxman’s comments on caste census

Minister for Transport and BC Welfare Ponnam Prabhakar addressing a press conference at Gandhi Bhavan in Hyderabad on Saturday.

Minister for Transport and BC Welfare Ponnam Prabhakar addressing a press conference at Gandhi Bhavan in Hyderabad on Saturday.

Minister for Transport and Backward Classes Welfare Ponnam Prabhakar criticised BJP OBC Morcha national president and Rajya Sabha member K. Laxman’s reported remarks that the Congress government is conducting a caste census solely for political gain. Mr. Prabhakar demanded that Dr. Laxman retract his comments.

Speaking to the media at Gandhi Bhavan on Saturday, Mr. Prabhakar questioned the BJP’s commitment to the welfare of Other Backward Classes (OBCs), Scheduled Castes (SCs), and Scheduled Tribes (STs). The Congress leader highlighted Congress’ historical role in social welfare initiatives, noting that the term ‘Backward Classes’ was first introduced in Parliament by then Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru in 1946. He pointed out Congress’ role in enacting pivotal policies, including reservations for OBCs in higher educational institutions like IITs and IIMs and in government employment.

Referring to the ongoing controversy over caste enumeration in Telangana, the Minister emphasised that while States such as Bihar have initiated caste surveys to gather accurate demographic data, the BJP has shown resistance to similar measures. He cited recent instances where BJP leaders have allegedly opposed caste-based policies, and mentioned efforts to block increased BC reservations in Jharkhand and a reluctance to adopt similar initiatives in other States. He also criticised statements by BJP leaders, including Union Home Minister Amit Shah, who reportedly suggested the possibility of re-evaluating the 50% reservation cap in Jharkhand.

Mr. Prabhakar challenged BJP leaders to clarify their stance on caste enumeration and local body reservations for BCs, affirming that the Congress-led State government will continue to advocate for marginalised sections in Telangana. Reaffirming Telangana’s commitment to BC welfare, he assured that the State’s comprehensive caste survey would not “remain in cold storage” but would be made public to inform policies for social and economic justice.

Political bigwigs campaign for candidates in Shiggaon

0

With the deadline for the poll campaign fast approaching, the canvassing for the byelection to Shiggaon Assembly constituency has gained momentum with political bigwigs making vote appeals through road shows, door-to-door visits, and public addresses.

On Saturday, political leaders, including present Ministers, a Union Minister, and former Ministers and legislators were found engaging in brisk campaign for their respective party candidates.

District in-charge Minister Shivanand Patil campaigned in Tavarumellalli, Kamanahalli, Vanahalli, and other villages. He said the State government had allocated ₹100 crore for development works and projects to resolve the drinking water crisis.

He alleged that MP and former Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai had failed to resolve pending issues particularly the drinking water problem. He promised that Congress candidate Yasir Ahmed Khan Pathan, being a grassroot-level worker, would always be with them to resolve their issues. Minister D. Sudhakar and former Minister Vinay Kulkarni too campaigned for Mr. Pathan at various places.

On the other hand, the BJP campaign was led by former Union Minister Basanagouda Patil Yatnal, who promised to make the whole of India a laboratory for Sanatana Dharma. Making a vote appeal for Bharath Bommai, he described what he termed as the adverse impact of the Waqf Act and how the Congress government had indulged in appeasement politics. He took a dig at Ministers Laxmi Hebbalkar, D.K. Shivakumar, R.B. Thimmapur, and others and alleged that the State was being looted by the Congress leaders.

He alleged that although Panchamasalis were included under 2D category during the BJP tenure, the present government failed to implement it and questioned the silence of Panchamasali leader Ms. Hebbalkar over the issue.

MP and former Chief Minister Jagadish Shettar too attacked the Congress for what he termed as appeasement politics. Under Mr. Siddaramaiah, corruption had spread its tentacles in Karnataka, he alleged. Along with them, Mr. Basavaraj Bommai, former Ministers Araga Jnanendra and Shankar Patil Munenakoppa, and others campaigned for the party candidate.

Meanwhile, trying to cash in on the waqf board issue, a BJP delegation visited Haranagiri village to console the family of Rudrappa Balikai, who end his life in 2022 and claimed that the board was the reason for his death.
