The National Institute of Technology–Tiruchi (NIT-T) presented the Distinguished Alumni Awards for 2024 in the academics, research, innovation, invention and corporate/industry; public administration and entrepreneurial venture categories on Saturday.
The awards were conferred by B.S. Murty, director, Indian Institute of Technology – Hyderabad. NIT-T director G. Aghila, G. Uma, dean, (Institutional Development and Alumni Relations), and K. Mahalingam, president, Regional Engineering College Alumni Association (RECAL), were present.
This year, 12 Distinguished Alumni Awards were announced and nine of the award-winners received them.
Mr. Murty said institutions gained visibility through their alumni and it was time their expertise was utilised to make future generations of students industry ready. He underscored the significance of such efforts in elevating the stature of Indian institutions in the eyes of the world and encouraged NIT-T to continue its pursuit of excellence.
Ms. Aghila highlighted on NIT-T’s initiative to foster innovation and entrepreneurship, with a focus on the proposed 20-acre Research and Innovation Hub along the Tiruchi-Thanjavur highway for research in AgriTech, FinTech, SpaceTech, GreenTech, Quantum Computing, Semiconductors, and Generative Artificial Intelligence. She invited alumni to engage in research collaborations and support scholarships.
For Excellence in Academics/Research/Innovation/Invention, the award-winners were: Devesh Ranjan, professor, Georgia Institute of Technology, U.S.; G. Jegan Lal, retired deputy director, Liquid Propulsion Systems Centre, Indian Space Research Organisation – Thiruvananthapuram; and Naresh Bhatnagar, professor, Indian Institute of Technology – Delhi.
The Corporate/Industry Excellence awards were bestowed on K.V. Balasubramaniam, retired Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Bharat Serums and Vaccines, Mumbai; K.V. Subramaniam, president, Reliance Life Sciences, Mumbai; Ramaswamy Visweswaran, managing director, Arjas Modern Steel Pvt. Ltd., Bengaluru; Hari Mahadevan, founder, Mahadevan Consultancy LLC, U.S.; Suresh Krishna, president and CEO, Northern Tool and Equipment, U.S., and T.K. Rengarajan, retired corporate vice-president, Microsoft Corporation, U.S..
G. Saikumar, senior advocate, Supreme Court, was presented the excellence award in public service. Mr. Saikumar recalled his early days in Electronics Trade and Technology Development Corporation Ltd and how his education at the then Regional Engineering College had equipped him with skills not just in the field of engineering, but also helped him in his legal career.
The Excellence in Entrepreneurial Venture awards were given to Shyam Ramamurthy, founder, Catalynk Business Solutions, Chennai, and Siva Namasivayam CEO, and founder, Cohere Health, U.S.
One of the Distinguished Alumni Award-winners announced an endowment programme in his mother’s name to support a meritorious girl from an economically disadvantaged background.
