Tension prevailed for a while at the Karaikadu check-post near Kolathur after a group of tourists from Uttar Pradesh, travelling by bus, allegedly assaulted two plainclothes head constables on duty during a vehicle check.
Locals intervened and rescued the constables, who sustained minor injuries.
Purported videos of the incident showed a tourist attempting to attack one of the policemen with an iron rod, and a policeman striking some of the tourists.
The incident occurred on Friday (December 27, 2024) morning at the Prohibition Enforcement Wing (PEW) check-post on the Tamil Nadu-Karnataka border. When the bus carrying 30 tourists on their way to Male Mahadeshwara Hills in Karnataka arrived at the check-post, head constables Suganeswaran and Senthil began inspecting the vehicle, resulting in an altercation with the bus driver. Reportedly, a heated altercation ensued between a few tourists and the constables, and they allegedly assaulted the policemen.
On witnessing the commotion, locals rushed to the scene to prevent further violence. They rescued the two constables, and one of the tourists was taken inside the check-post. When a few other tourists tried to free him, one of the policemen reportedly struck back. Some tourists were also reportedly injured during this exchange.
The Kolathur police registered a case against the bus driver, Sivanarayanan, 52, and cleaner Ajay, 20, for assaulting and threatening the police personnel and using obscene language against them. They were released on bail and allowed to continue on their journey.
No action was taken against the policemen who allegedly attacked the tourists.
