Trinamool Congress has alleged that supporters of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) have killed a party worker in West Bengal’s Nandigram, following the recovery of the body of a deceased Trinamool worker on Wednesday night.
The deceased has been identified as 52-year-old Mahadeb Bishoi, a resident of Nandigram Block 1 Gokulnagar panchayat area of West Bengal’s Purba Medinipur district.
The body of the deceased has been sent for post-mortem but no arrests have been made so far, police sources said. They added the deceased was found with multiple injuries in the body.
The body was reportedly recovered from the deceased’s tea stall at Nandigram’s Brindaban Chowk market.
Meanwhile, protests by Trinamool Congress workers and leaders have erupted in the area, with many alleging that Mr. Bishoi was being threatened and pressured by local BJP leaders for his involvement with Trinamool, days before his death.
Trinamool Congress leaders have also alleged that Mr. Bishoi was murdered by BJP supporters, and have demanded a high-level investigation and prompt arrests of culprits.
“Multiple BJP supporters who are part of the gram panchayat are behind our party worker’s murder. They killed him and left him at his shop. In fact, he was attacked fifteen days before his murder,” Bappaditya Garg, president of Trinamool’s Nandigram 1 block, said.
“Yesterday Suvendu Adhikari had come to Nandigram. Soon after, a Trinamool Congress worker is murdered. We believe there is a link between the two events,” he added, referring to BJP leader and Leader of Opposition Suvendu Adhikari.
Meanwhile, local BJP leaders have denied the allegations, claiming that Mr. Bishoi’s death is a result of drunken activities in a Christmas picnic on Tuesday.
