The Puducherry administration is taking all efforts to provide 4% reservation for differently abled persons in government jobs, Chief Minister N. Rangasamy said here on Monday.

Speaking at an event to mark the International Day for the Differently Abled, the Chief Minister said 4% reservation was provided in the recently concluded recruitment drive to fill the post of junior engineers in the Public Works Department. There was a plan to extend the reservation provision to other government recruitment drives, he added.

“In the next three months, we will be conducting the recruitment drive to fill around 800 posts under Assistant, LDC and UDC categories. We are planning to provide 4% quota for differently abled persons in these categories,” Mr. Rangasamy said.

The government was planning to reserve houses for differently abled when tenements are constructed. Other measures being planned for the differently abled community included enhancement of quantum of free rice and assistance for sporting events, he added.

Speaking on the occasion, Lieutenant Governor K. Kailashnathan said the governments at Centre and Union Territory are committed to the welfare of differently abled persons.  He said the differently abled persons are committed to their work as they are aware of various difficulties faced by public.

“Generally, we see that differently abled persons work with a sense of duty and care because they can easily understand the pain and sufferings of others. I have recently honoured the Mahe Municipal Commissioner, Satender Singh, for his dedicated work in the Municipality. Differently abled persons are making their mark in several fields including sports, science and technology. The government is committed to support the community excel in all fields,” he said.

The Lt. Governor and Chief Minister distributed various assistance including free laptops to differently abled persons.
