The Indian Institute of Technology Madras has launched a research centre to develop next generation Amoled (active-matrix organic light emitting diode) displays for smartphones, tablets, watches and wearables.
The centre, funded by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), Defence Research and Development Organisation and Tata Sons, will work on a novel patterning technique to lower the cost for display manufacture in the country.
The centre that was inaugurated by S. Krishnan, secretary of MeitY, comprises researchers from various fields working on developing displays. It has a state-of-the-art cleanroom to house fabrication and characterisation equipment.
Mr. Krishnan said the inauguration marked a pivotal step towards fostering innovation, driving self-reliance and empowering the country’s industrial growth. He expressed confidence that the research centre would innovate novel techniques to develop Amoled displays for the Indian and global market.
Institute director V. Kamakoti said the centre would develop next generation Amoled displays and support the country’s initiative to develop a semiconductor industry.
