Youth wings of the Congress and the CPI(M) took out special carols here on Monday in protest against the Sangh Parivar attack on the Christmas celebrations held at Government UP School, Nellepilly.
A team of Sangh Parivar activists led by Viswa Hindu Parishad (VHP) leaders had burst into the Christmas celebrations at the school on Friday and threatened the teachers and students.
VHP leaders K. Anil Kumar, 52, Sushasanan Karuthedathukalam, 52, and Velayudhan Thekkumuri, 58, were arrested and sent to jail for the attack.
The Congress and CPI(M) youth wings asserted on Monday that the spirit of celebrations in the State would unite the people across religions. The Youth Congress workers took out the carol from Mattumantha to Nallepilly.
School children too joined the celebrations. Youth Congress workers warned that if anyone tried to destroy the State’s communal harmony, they would be handled by the people.
DYFI workers took out the carol and distributed sweets. They said disrupting the Christmas celebration was unheard of in Kerala. “Those trying to inject communal poison in the Malayali society would be isolated,” they said.
Meanwhile, a Christmas crib set up at GBUP School, Thattamangalam, was found destroyed on Monday. The crib was set up on Friday. The teachers found the crib vandalised when they reached the school on Monday. The police started an investigation following a complaint.
Minister for Power K. Krishnankutty said here on Monday that a special police team would investigate both cases. He said it was suspected that the crib was vandalised deliberately, and it would be investigated if the same group was behind both the attacks.
The police said forensic examination would be completed soon with the help of the dog squad.
