President Droupadi Murmu on Monday (December 23, 2024) appointed retired Supreme Court judge V. Ramasubramanian from Tamil Nadu as the Chairman of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC).

A high-power committee led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi met on December 18 to select the next chairperson of NHRC. Both Leaders of the Opposition (LoPs), Mallikarjun Kharge in the Rajya Sabha and Rahul Gandhi in the Lok Sabha also attended the meeting.

The post of NHRC chairperson has been lying vacant since Justice (retired) Arun Kumar Mishra completed his tenure on June 1. Vijaya Bharathi Sayani, a member of the NHRC, became its acting chairperson after Justice Mishra demitted office.

According to the law governing the NHRC, the committee which selects the NHRC chief is headed by the Prime Minister and has Lok Sabha Speaker, Home Minister, LoPs of both the Houses and deputy chairperson of the Rajya Sabha as its members.
