The Golden Rock Railway Workshop in Tiruchi has been adjudged the best among 44 workshops in various railway zones in the country for its outstanding performance in quality and other parameters.
The 96-year-old workshop was awarded the Rolling Stock shield for 2023-24 at the 69th Railway Week function in New Delhi recently. Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw handed over the shield to Southern Railway General Manager R. N. Singh and the Chief Workshop Manager of Golden Rock Workshop Santosh Kumar Patro at the event.
The workshop finished on top in quality and other parameters in rolling stock performance and won the shield for the fourth time at the national level. It achieved 100 % target in respect of turnout of periodic overhauling of coaches, ensuring 100% safety of workers, effectively utilising funds, and adopting all safety measures stipulated for factories.
It received the shield for productivity improvement, achieving a peak out turn of 750 various freight wagons, carrying out periodic overhauling of steam locomotives of the heritage Nilgiri Mountain Railway, commissioning critical machinery and plants and achieving various certification such as IMS, energy management and platinum level rating for go green activities and utilising renewable energies such as compressed biogas and solar photovoltaic power for process applications.
Established in 1928, the Golden Rock Workshop is one of the premier repair facilities in the Indian Railways known for its excellent quality of workmanship and culture. It carries out periodic overhaul of diesel locomotives, LHB power cars, MEMU rake, and tower wagons. It also carries out periodic overhaul of X-class steam locomotives operating in the Nilgiri Mountain Railway and NMR coaches besides manufacturing different types of wagons and X-class steam locomotives. It is involved in the conversion of rolling stock for departmental use.
The workshop has a NABL certified metallurgical lab and weld metallurgy lab, centre of excellence in diesel high horsepower pack maintenance, and Industry 4.0 enabled electrical energy monitoring system, a press release here said.
Employee honoured
T.M. Gopalakrishnan, Senior Section Engineer, Golden Rock Workshop, was one of the eight employees of the Southern Railway to receive the prestigious ‘Athi Vishist Rail Seva Puraskar’ from the Railway Minister at the function.
The award was given to Mr. Gopalakrishnan for his pioneering multiple in-house innovations that enhanced efficiency and productivity in coach painting, wagon manufacturing, and welding processes at the workshop.
