A suspected robber allegedly murdered a man staying in a farmhouse in Kyathanahalli village in Srirangapatna Rural police station limits with a chainsaw after attacking his wife with same tool on Saturday.

According to police, the accused arrived at the farmhouse carrying the chainsaw, a handheld portable saw used to cut wood, in a bag around 7 p.m. and knocked on the door.

When Yashodhamma opened the door, the accused said he had come to deliver the chainsaw that had been ordered online by them. When Yashodhamma said they had not placed any such order, the accused removed the chainsaw from the bag and attacked her by switching it on.

When Yashodhamma, who suffered a gash on her cheek, fell down with severe bleeding injuries, the accused barged into the house and attacked Ramesh, 55, who was recovering from a paralytic stroke he suffered sometime ago.

Meanwhile, Ms. Yashodhamma, who soon recovered from the attack, bolted the house from outside and raised an alarm that soon led to neighbours and other passersby rush to her aid.

While Ramesh died in the attack, the accused Mohammed Ibrahim was caught by the public and handed over to the police after a thrashing.

The police said the accused, an employee of a private company, had lost a lot of money due to his addiction to online gambling. He had amassed huge debts and was under pressure from financiers.

The police said Ms. Yashodhamma was undergoing treatment at a hospital in Mysuru.

Superintendent of Police, Mandya, Mallikarjun Baladandi, visited the farmhouse on Sunday and held discussions with local police officials.
