Following the suspicious death of four dogs, one adult and three puppies, at Surveyor Colony in Madurai on Thursday, the Thiruppalai police have booked a case against perpetrators.
Complainant, S. Murugeswari, member of Animal Welfare Board of India, who was informed by one of the animal rescuers about the poisoning, rushed to the spot to see the dogs lying unconscious.
Following the statements of the residents and CCTV footage evidence, the team earmarked a few residents in the vicinity as suspects.
Ms. Murugeswari said that as the female dog which gave birth to small ones recently was found to be a threat to the goats which were raised by one of the residents, the alleged person might have poisoned the dogs.
As the residents witnessed the person feeding the dogs, it is suspected to be the cause of death, she added.
Further, as post-mortem reports have showed the presence of poisonous substance in the organs of the dogs, it was confirmed that they were poisoned.
Following the complaint with the Thiruppalai police, they booked the person under sections 325 (mischief by killing or maiming animal) of Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and 11(1)(l) (mutilates any animal or kills any animal (including stray dogs) by using the method of strychnine injections in the heart or in any other unnecessarily cruel manner) of Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960.
Ms. Murugeswari said the police while investigating the case should also look into the sale of poison which the miscreants used for feeding the dogs with an intention to kill them.
“If it is so easily available, then any person would use it for other vengeful activities. So, the police should make sure they take action action those involved in selling the poison,” she added.
Further investigation is on.
