A law student was stabbed to death by a gang near a school in Cheranmahadevi in the district on Friday.
Police said the deceased, C. Manikandan of Cheranmahadevi, was a first year law student studying in Chennai. He had come home for holidays two days ago. After visiting his farm, he was returning home when an armed gang, comprising Mayandi, Thangapandi, Mariappan and Rajaram, allegedly intercepted and stabbed him with a knife.
Passers-by rushed Manikandan to Cheranmahadevi Government Hospital, from where he was later shifted to Tirunelveli Government Medical College Hospital for advanced treatment. However, Manikandan succumbed to his injuries on the same day.
Cheranmahadevi Police, who have registered a case of murder, have launched a search for the accused.
Murder near court
Meanwhile, the murder committed in broad daylight near Tirunelveli District Court Complex on Friday has created an outrage across the State after the Madras High Court suo motu took up the case.
Tirunelveli City Police arrested seven persons alleged to have been involved in the murder of Mayandi on Friday. One among the nabbed accused, R. Siva, 19, was admitted to Tirunelveli Government Medical College Hospital for a cut injury on one of his fingers. The police said the injury occurred during the attack on Mayandi.
Preliminary investigations suggested that the murderous attack was carried out in reprisal for the murder of Rajamani, a panchayat ward councillor in Keezhanatham in Tirunelveli district in 2023. Rajamani was hacked to death by an armed gang, which reportedly included Mayandi.
