Security officials intercept 3.9 lakh Yaba tablets worth ₹78 crore in Tripura

In a joint operation conducted in Tripura, security officials intercepted and recovered a consignment of 3.9 lakh Yaba tablets, a common name for a pharmaceutical drug with methamphetamine and caffeine, from the general area Gandacharra, just outside of Teliamura town on Friday night.

Officials said that the operation was conducted by the Assam Rifles, the Customs Department and the Tripura Police jointly, which also led to the apprehension of 33-year-old Melaghar-based Rakesh Miya, who was allegedly transporting the consignment that security officials have said is approximately valued at ₹78 crore in the international market.

News of this drug seizure came on a day Union Home Minister Amit Shah was in Agartala addressing a plenary session of the North Eastern Council and had spoken about how the northeastern States had become a corridor for drug smuggling that needed to be plugged.

In a statement issued by the Assam Rifles, officials said further investigation was under way to “dismantle the network behind this consignment”.

“The recovery of such a massive quantity of drugs is a testament to the unparalleled dedication and intelligence capabilities of our forces,” a senior official involved in the operation said.

“Yaba tablets, infamous for their devastating effects on individuals and communities, are a known favourite of drug syndicates targeting vulnerable populations. This monumental success highlights the unwavering commitment of the security forces to counter the menace of cross-border drug trafficking and safeguard the youth of the region,” the statement by Assam Rifles added.
