Abhishek Raghuram rendered an astounding and unique concert on the ninth day of the 73rd annual music and arts festival at Sri Sathguru Sangeetha Samajam, with the percussion support from Akkarai Sornalata on the violin, V Harikumar on the mrudangam and Tiruchi Krishnaswamy on the ghatam.
Worshipping Ganesha, the resident of the Muladhara lotus, through “Sri Gananatham Bhajare” by Muthuswamy Dikshitar in Isha Manohari, Abhishek commenced his concert with life energy.
Siva, the essence of Sama Veda, was worshipped through “nada tanumanisaṃ sankaram” by Thyagaraja. With his rich and rounded tone, he then rendered Mayamalavagowla for Ponniah Pillai’s “Mayaa Atheetha Swaroopini” which evoked the Bhakthi rasa.
His next rendition was a kriti which Dikshidar composed at the house of Thyagaraja for “mamava pattabhirama” in manirangu, composed by Dikshitar in Thiruvaiyaru at the house of Thyagaraja. Abhishek elaborated the raga and took the audience to the coronation ceremony of Sri Rama.
The Varali alapana saw some new depths at different octaves, trying out nuances of the raga with extempore creativity for “ va va kanda” by Papanasam Sivan.
The violinist Sornalata was full of self-confidence and rose to the expectations of the singer and the audience as well. The Tani that followed witnessed the rhythmic virtuosity on the mrudangam by Harikumar and on the ghatam by Krishnasamy.
