As many as 89 boatmen associations are not carrying out the sand excavation from the Godavari River in the East Godavari district reportedly due to the low payment fixed by the government under the new sand policy. As many as 119 boatmen associations have been permitted to carry out the sand excavation from the river Godavari for sale along the banks of river Godavari.

“Barely 30 boatmen associations are engaged in the sand excavation activity while 89 associations are yet to turn up to accept the work order for the excavation of sand,” said East Godavari Collector P. Prasanthi.

On Saturday (November 09), Ms. Prasanthi and Joint Collector S. Chinna Ramudu and officials from the Revenue, Irrigation and Groundwater departments inspected the open sand reaches, where they found that many of the permitted boatmen associations were not active in the Kovvur Revenue Division.

Investigation

Joint Collector S. Chinna Ramudu told The Hindu: “We are studying the challenges of the boatmen associations to carry out sand excavation. We are preparing to cancel the permission of the boatmen associations that have failed to complete the work order given to them as per the requirement and sand policy.”

Each boatmen association comprises at least nine to 10 workers, who dive into the river and collect the sand manually and load it into the boat. A majority of the workers working in the sand excavation are from the Central India. Of the 13 open sand reaches, only six are in operation due to inactive boatmen associations.

Rajasthan Chief Minister Bhajanlal Sharma on Saturday (November 9, 2024) said that Congress has been in government the most in the last 70 years since independence, making “owners of the country beggars as the beggars became prosperous”.

“Whenever elections come, the Congress spreads lies, wants to divide people on the basis of caste and religion,” he said while addressing an election rally in Jhunjhunu Assembly constituency where bypoll will be held on November 13. He was seeking votes for party candidate Rajendra Bhamboo.

He said that the BJP came to power in Rajasthan 11 months ago and started working on the promises made in the election manifesto from day one.

“Congress has been in power for most of the 70 years but Congress made the owners of the country beggars and those who were beggars became prosperous.

“You, the owners of the country, wake up and identify who can do good for you,” he said.

The CM said that the State government will fulfill all the promises made to the people. “BJP does what it says.” “We formed SIT for paper leak cases after coming to power. Today, about 200 people who are accused in paper leak cases are in jail,” he said.

BJP State President Madan Rathore, also part of the rally, said that the party is committed to the welfare of the people and the development of the State and the nation.

Lack of a bridge has been giving a tough time to residents of Veerasolapuram near Kattumannarkovil, as they have been finding it difficult to wade through the Rajan canal to reach the burial ground located on the other side.

On Thursday, a group of residents waded through neck-deep water for about 500 metre in the Rajan canal carrying the mortal remains of Kaliyaperumal, 70, a resident of the village. A video clip of the villagers carrying the body has since gone viral on social media.

Residents said this has been a recurring scenario for the past few years as there is no alternative road to reach the burial ground on the other side. The situation turns worse when the canal flows at full capacity. For long, the locals have been demanding the construction of a bridge across the canal.

According to an official, a new bridge was sanctioned in 2023 and it has already been constructed. There are two habitations in the area and the new bridge is located near one of the habitations. An old bridge has been lying in disuse and the residents of the other habitation also have been demanding a new bridge. “We will look into the demand if it is technically possible”, he said.

Collector Sibi Adhithya Senthil Kumar said that a new bridge would be constructed at an outlay of ₹20 lakh.

With inflow in the canal now on the rise a temporary bridge would be built immediately, he said.

The council organised an industry orientation interface meeting of administrators of engineering and polytechnic colleges on Thursday in Chennai. TNSCST member secretary S. Fear, intimidation will only yield unnatural peace in J&K: Omar Abdullah

0

Expressing satisfaction over the passage of a resolution calling for restoration of the special status of Jammu and Kashmir in the State Assembly, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Friday (November 8, 2024) said people “have to be partners in peace, and fear and intimidation will only yield unnatural peace” in J&K.

Mr. Abdullah said, “It’s easy to pass a resolution that the Centre will throw into a dustbin. The challenge was to pass a resolution that reflected the aspirations of people. Also, the world came to know of the fact that our suggestion and approval was not sought on the decisions of August 5, 2019. Prime Minister and Home Minister are targeting us for the resolution. If it was a compromised and weak resolution, no one would have talked about it. Their statements show that the resolution was historic. We have to look at the future with an eye on what we had. We did not want to use words that would limit us.”

Meanwhile, the BJP continued its protests against the resolution for the third day in the House.

While speaking on Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha’s address, Mr. Abdullah ruled out any friction with the security agencies and said his government will extend cooperation and coordination, especially with police, to establish peace in J&K.

“One of the important responsibilities for us is to maintain law and order, to prepare against militancy, terror and violence. The situation cannot be normalised in a vacuum. The government and the administration of J&K L-G are in close coordination in this matter. I want to assure J&K Police, central forces and other security forces that our government stands with them completely in keeping the situation normal and in establishing peace here,” Mr. Abdullah said.

He, however, added that fear and intimidation might help in unnatural calm but the situation would improve only with the coordination and cooperation of people. “People have to become partners in peace,” Mr. Abdullah said.

The CM said it was unfortunate that CID verification was weaponised in J&K. “Passport verification and job verification were used to persecute people rather than win hearts. All cases where the accused do not face serious cases and those against whom charges are not framed, the government needs to think. Right now, it’s not under purview. Once it is, we will work towards it,” the Chief Minister said.

Resolution does not limit options: CM

Describing the resolution for restoration of the special status as an act that does not “limit options”, Mr. Abdullah sought immediate restoration of Statehood to J&K. “In terms of power, this is not the Assembly that we are entitled to. Though this Assembly is the means to reach there. J&K should become a State again, a full-fledged State not a hybrid one. This has been repeatedly promised to the people of J&K by the Prime Minister and the Home Minister,” he said. Mr. Abdullah said he had a ‘successful’ meeting with the Prime Minister and the Home Minister recently.

He said the act of passing a resolution in the Assembly has allowed “people to express themselves freely”. “There was a feeling of being choked. After five years of silence, people are able to speak and express themselves freely,” Mr. Abdullah said. “We have the right to live with dignity. Statehood is the first step to heal the wounds inflicted on our identity, existence and dignity. Like other States, locals should have right over land, job and resources,” he added.

The CM also hinted at disallowing auctioning of hotels in Gulmarg and Pahalgam. “We are not opposed to investment in J&K. But we will not sell our assets in Gulmarg and Pahalgam. We will not sell crown jewels. We will not allow anyone to buy our assets and leave our people unemployed,” Mr. Abdullah said.

BJP protest in Assembly

Earlier in the day, BJP legislators continued their protest against the passage of the resolution for the third consecutive day. Marching into the well of the House, they raised slogans like ‘Pakistani agenda nahi chalega’.

As they created a ruckus, Speaker Abdul Rahim Rather ordered marshals to move 12 Opposition legislators, including Awami Ittehad Party MLA Sheikh Khurshid, outside the House.

This was followed by a walkout by the remaining 11 BJP MLAs as a mark of protest. BJP leader Sunil Sharma, who is also the Leader of the Opposition, staged a sit-in protest outside the Assembly and also held a mock Assembly session.

“Today is a dark day in the history of J&K and its democratic traditions. For the past three days, the Speaker has acted in favour of the National Conference and has been suppressing the Opposition’s voice. We are protesting against the highhandedness of the Speaker,” Mr. Sharma said.

Meanwhile, Speaker Rather said some MLAs tried to disrupt the session and he acted as per the law. On the resolution and dropping of the word Article 370 from it, Mr. Rather said the special status was part of Article 370. “Whether you call it special status or 370, it’s the same,” he said.

The J&K Assembly was adjourned sine die after the House passed the Motion of Thanks on Lieutenant Governor’s address.

On the resolution, Mr. Abdullah said, “It’s easy to pass a resolution that the Centre will throw into a dustbin. The challenge was to pass a resolution that reflected the aspirations of people. Also, the world came to know about the fact our suggestion and approval was not sought for the decisions of August 5, 2019. Prime Minister and Home Minister are targeting us for the resolution. If it was a compromise and weak resolution, no one would have talked about it. Their statements show that the resolution was historic and opens doors and not closes now. We have to look at the future with an eye on what we had. We did not want to use words that would limit us.”
