The Public Works Department (PWD) has commenced work on four-laning the 600-metre bottleneck road that had been holding up traffic on the busy Thokkottu-Mudipu State Highway 300 near Thokkottu bus stand.

While about 200-metre stretch from Thokkottu junction to the bus stand exit would have a 11-metre wide carriageway with median on either side, the 400-metre stretch from bus stand exit to Chembugudde would have 7.6-metre wide carriageway on either sides with median, said a senior PWD engineer.

The stretches would also have 560-metre concrete retaining wall as the widening involves hill cutting on the adjacent stretches. Concrete shoulder drains would be constructed for a length of 1197 metre along the stretch.

The total estimated cost of highway widening, including construction of retaining walls, road furniture, parking bays and other facilities, was estimated to cost ₹25 crore.

Along with eliminating the bottleneck, the PWD has also undertaken widening of the 800-metre stretch of the highway to four lane with each lane being 7.6-metre wide from Assaigoli to Nadupadavu, towards Konaje. The total estimated cost of highway widening, including construction of retaining walls, road furniture, parking bays and other facilities, was estimated to cost ₹25 crore.

Massive bottleneck

With the road just 7-metre wide, the stretch from Thokkottu bus stand to Chembugudde has been a massive bottleneck holding up vehicular movement. Vehicles used to take 10-15 minutes to negotiate the stretch, particularly during peak hours. The highway has been the lifeline of the education corridor, Thokkottu-Deralakatte-Konaje, where a number of professional colleges and hospitals are functional.

Easing traffic flow

Stating that issues concerning land acquisition delayed the highway widening work near the bus stand, the officials said the widening exercise was expected to ease the traffic flow upon its completion. The PWD has been widening the 14-km education corridor between Thokkottu and Mudipu in bits and pieces. About 10-km stretch of the corridor was already made four lane, including Chembugudde-Deralakatte-Natekal stretch and work on the remaining stretch was being taken up in phases.

Blake Lively has accused her It Ends With Usdirector and co-star Justin Baldoni of sexual harassment on the set of the movie and a subsequent effort to “destroy” her reputation in a legal complaint.

The complaint obtained by The Associated Press, which The New York Times reported was filed Friday (December 20, 2024) with the California Civil Rights Department, precedes a lawsuit. It names Baldoni, the studio behind the romantic drama It Ends With Us and Baldoni’s publicists among the defendants.

In the complaint, Lively accuses Baldoni and the studio of embarking on a “multi-tiered plan” to damage her reputation following a meeting in which she and her husband Ryan Reynolds addressed “repeated sexual harassment and other disturbing behavior” by Baldoni and a producer on the movie.

The plan, the complaint said, included a proposal to plant theories on online message boards, engineer a social media campaign and place news stories critical of Lively.

“To safeguard against the risk of Ms. Lively ever revealing the truth about Mr. Baldoni, the BaldoniWayfarer team created, planted, amplified, and boosted content designed to eviscerate Ms. Lively’s credibility,” the complaint states. “They engaged in the same techniques to bolster Mr. Baldoni’s credibility and suppress any negative content about him.”

The complaint also says Baldoni “abruptly pivoted away from” the movie’s marketing plan and “used domestic violence ‘survivor content’ to protect his public image.”

Bryan Freedman, an attorney representing Baldoni, Wayfarer Studios and its representatives, called the claims “completely false, outrageous and intentionally salacious.”

He pushed back against Lively’s allegations of a coordinated campaign, saying the studio “proactively” hired a crisis manager “due to the multiple demands and threats made by Ms. Lively during production.”

Freedman also said Lively threatened to not appear on set and not promote the film “if her demands were not met.”

Those demands were not specified in the statement, but Lively’s complaint lists 30 demands that she said Baldoni and others agreed to after their tense sit-down over her hostile work environment concerns.

Among them: “no more showing of nude videos or images of women” to Lively and others on set and no more discussions about pornography, sexual experiences or genitalia.

She also said Baldoni should not ask her trainer about her weight without her consent, should not press her about her religious beliefs and should make “no further mention of her dead father.”

An intimacy coordinator was also required to be on set whenever Lively shared a scene with Baldoni and he was barred from entering her trailer or the make-up trailer while she was undressed.

The demands also stipulated that there would be “no more improvising of kissing” scenes or adding of intimate scenes to the film outside of the ones in the script Lively approved when she signed on.

“I hope that my legal action helps pull back the curtain on these sinister retaliatory tactics to harm people who speak up about misconduct and helps protect others who may be targeted,” Lively said in a statement to the Times. A representative for Lively referred the AP to the Times report, in which Lively denied planting or spreading negative information about Baldoni or the studio.

It Ends With Us, an adaptation of Colleen Hoover’s bestselling 2016 novel, was released in August 2024, exceeding box office expectations with a $50 million debut. But the movie’s release was shrouded by speculation over discord between the lead pair. Baldoni took a backseat in promoting the film while Lively took center stage along with Reynolds, who was on the press circuit for Deadpool & Wolverine at the same time.

Baldoni — who starred in the telenovela send-up Jane the Virgin, directed Five Feet Apart and wrote Man Enough, a book pushing back against traditional notions of masculinity — did respond to concerns that the film romanticised domestic violence, telling the AP at the time that critics were “absolutely entitled to that opinion.”

“If anybody has had that real-life experience, I can imagine how hard it would be to imagine their experience being in a romance novel,” he said. “To them, I would just offer that we were very intentional in the making of this movie.”

The Mummy is set to rise from the sands once more, this time under the creative vision of Evil Dead Rise filmmaker Lee Cronin. The director will write and helm a fresh reimagining of the iconic horror staple for New Line Cinema, with a planned release date of April 17, 2026.

Cronin, known for his modern twist on horror, promises an entirely new take on the undead tale. “This will be unlike any Mummy movie you’ve seen before,” Cronin shared with The Hollywood Reporter.

Horror heavyweights Atomic Monster and Blumhouse are producing the film alongside Cronin’s own Doppelgängers banner. The project marks a reunion for Cronin and New Line, following the success of Evil Dead Rise, which earned nearly $150 million globally.

James Wan, Jason Blum, and John Keville will produce, with Michael Clear, Judson Scott, and Macdara Kelleher serving as executive producers. The production is co-financed by Atomic Monster and Blumhouse, with Alayna Glasthal overseeing for Atomic Monster.

While plot details remain under wraps, the film aims to breathe new life into the ancient mummy mythology. Traditionally associated with Universal’s classic monster films and Hammer Films’ 1959 adaptation, this version promises to push boundaries in horror storytelling.

Train services disrupted for about an hour at Visakhapatnam railway station due to ‘technical snag’

0

There was disruption of trains arriving at Visakhapatnam junction reportedly due to the snapping of OHE (overhead equipment) towards the end of Platform No. 3 around 5.30 a.m. on Sunday (December 22) morning.

This had necessitated the change of platform for trains, which were scheduled to arrive on PF No. 3, resulting in delays in the arrival of a few trains.

Some passengers arriving by different trains early in the morning, took to social media to post pictures of trains, which were halted at satellite stations located on the outskirts of the city. Some said that OHE had snapped towards the end of PF-3. This had necessitated the replacement of the OHE cable on that platform. Tower cars were immediately requisitioned and the technical staff got down to work, replacing the snapped cable wire.

“Maintenance of OHE is being undertaken towards the other end on PF-3 (Chavulamadhum side) of the railway station as part of which the OH cable on PF-3 was replaced. There is no truth in the social media posts that OH cables had snapped on PF-3,” according to sources.

“I had gone to the station to take the 22847 Visakhapatnam-LTT (Mumbai) SF Express. I thought it would be delayed and was planning to take a bus. But, an announcement was made that the train would leave on time. I was surprised at the speed at which normalcy was restored,” says Karthik Vamsi of Visakhapatnam.

“Our train (22204) Duronto Express was detained for about an hour at Duvvada. It finally arrived three hours behind schedule at Visakhapatnam station,” said Aditya, who arrived from Secunderabad.

“It was a technical snag and the problem was rectified in about an hour. There is no threat to lives when snapping of overhead cables as the system automatically cuts of the power supply,” Divisional Railway Manager Manoj Kumar Sahoo told The Hindu, when his attention was drawn to the posts on social media that a major threat could have occurred.
