After the State told the Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court that the advisory committee of Avaniapuram jallikattu would comprise representatives of all the communities in Avaniapuram, the court closed the petitions that sought the inclusion of all the communities for the jallikattu event.
A Division Bench of Justices M.S. Ramesh and A.D. Maria Clete took into account the submission made by the State and closed the batch of public interest litigation petitions that sought a direction to constitute a committee comprising representatives of the all communities in Avaniapuram for the jallikattu event.
The petitions were filed by S.T. Kalyanasundaram, Mahalingam and Muniyasamy, the residents of Avaniapuram in Madurai district. They said that non-representation of the members of the Scheduled Castes and the Scheduled Tribes in the event would amount to violation of the fundamental rights guaranteed under the Constitution.
The State informed the court that similar to the last year jallikattu event, the organising committee would comprise officials and the advisory committee would comprise representatives of all the communities of Avaniapuram.
In a separate matter connected to jallikattu, the court heard a petition filed by C. Santhanam of Ambedkar Paraiyar Uravinmurai who had sought a direction to the authorities to allow the Paraikaruppasamy temple bull to participate in Palamedu jallikattu. The court directed the authorities concerned to consider the representation made by the petitioner and disposed of the petition.
