Police officials, along with representatives of Corporation and Highways Department, inspected two accident spots here on Saturday.
Additional Deputy Commissioner A. Thirumalai Kumar said, “While this is a regular procedure, this is the first inspection carried out in 2025.”
Every Saturday would be allotted for inspection of spots where accidents have taken place in the preceding week, he added.
As per that, police team headed by Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic) K. Vanitha along with officials of Corporation, Highways, Transport Department inspected Yanaikal and Thathaneri railway overbridge.
“As two fatal accidents were reported in the two locations last week, the police examined the cause and discussed measures to rectify the reasons for the accidents,” Mr. Thirumalai Kumar added.
During the inspection, he said that they found that encroachment and electricity post were the major reason for the accident. “Road widening was suggested to prevent future accidents,” he noted.
At Thathaneri, as the divider was found to be moved by the locals at unlikely hours, it was one of the reasons for accident there, a police source said.
All the findings would be submitted to Collector M.S. Sangeetha to find a solution to the problems and rectify them, the official added.
The Collector, following the perusal of the findings, would allocate funds for rectifying the deficiencies in the studied areas.
With Road Safety Month being observed during January, the traffic police are taking measures for educating motorists rather than imposing fines. Motorists should wear helmets and seatbelts. Issuing challans would not solve the problem permanently, the officials said.
