An awareness rally by a local councillor urged the public to celebrate Bhogi without burning things that could harm the environment.
Esan Elango (DMK), 34th ward councillor, held an awareness programme on the theme ‘Bhogi without smoke’ on Saturday.
It is a common tradition during Pongal for residents to burn household items that are of no use. Mr. Elango toured his ward on a bullock cart raising awareness of the environmental hazards of burning materials like plastics and tyres. Numerous placards sensitizing the public about safeguarding the environment were also carried.
Speaking to reporters, Mr. Elango said a waste collection centre has been set up near Ayyasamy Park in the ward, where people could hand over the waste instead of burning them.
