School Education Department to streamline aspects of EMIS to reduce teachers’ workload

In a significant move to reduce the administrative burden on teachers, the School Education Department has decided to simplify the data entry process on the Education Management Information System (EMIS).

Presently, the teachers and headmasters have to enter all details related to students, including their Aadhaar card, scholarship certificates, attendance, and kalaithiruvizha certificates, among others. Many teacher’s associations had appealed to the State government to outsource the work or to reduce it as it eats into their teaching time.

A circular had been issued by Samagra Shiksha — which provides technological support for EMIS — to the School Education Directors, instructing them to prepare schools for the proposed changes. It will be effective by February 28, according to the circular.

A review committee had been established to evaluate EMIS processes and recommend ways to reduce the teachers’ administrative burden under the chairmanship of the School Education Secretary. Modules such as the register, scholarships and student incentives, reading programmes, library module, house system and clubs, teacher timetable, and monthly reports among others will be either reduced or removed, according to the circular issued.

“Only redundancies in the data collection points will be removed so that relevant portions can be kept. No portion will be removed as the system will have to be kept up to date with the necessity,” an official from the school education department clarified.
