The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) conducted an intensive cleaning drive across 71 flyovers, the areas beneath them, and subways in the city on Thursday (January 11, 2025), removing 305 tonnes of garbage and construction debris.
The operation, carried out by 1,180 sanitation workers with the support of 332 machines and vehicles, cleared 1,072 unauthorised posters and banners, according to a press release.
The drive covered key flyovers such as Kathipara, Kodambakkam, Anna, Porur Junction, Perambur, Padi, Adyar LB Road, and Vadapalani flyovers, as well as subways like Medavakkam, Gengu Reddy, Ranganathan, Villivakkam, and Harrington Road.
During the cleaning operation, minor damages on the bridges and faulty streetlights were identified for necessary repairs. Recent drives by the GCC included the removal of 38.87 tonnes of waste, 3,954 posters, and 120 banners from roads, and 159.16 tonnes of garbage, 666 posters, and banners from burial grounds. On average, 5,900 metric tonnes of waste is cleared daily from GCC areas.
