The Greater Chennai City Police has been making special security arrangements with deployment of 16,000 police personnel to ensure a happy and safe Kaanum Pongal celebration for the public.
In view of the Kaanum Pongal festival on January 16, the public are expected to visit Marina Beach and other places of entertainment along with their families. Hence, elaborate security arrangements have been made on the instructions of Greater Chennai City Police Commissioner A. Arun to ensure that no untoward incident happens.
A total of 16, 000 police personnel, including Inspectors, Sub-Inspectors, personnel from Armed Reserve, Tamil Nadu Special Police personnel, will take up for security during the Pongal festival. Additionally, 1,500 Home Guards personnel will be stationed during the Pongal celebrations.
Three Temporary Mini Control Rooms have been set up from Labour Statue to Gandhi statue and Police Assistance Booths have been set up at the entrances of seven Service Roads from Labour statue to Light House, besides stationing of eight ambulances with medical teams and two fire tenders to meet out any exigencies. Apart from the above, mechanized boats along with 200 volunteers with swimming capability are being kept in readiness for rescue operations, said the city police.
