The Cyber Crime Wing of the Greater Chennai Police received 2,732 complaints pertaining to cyber fraud last year.
A total of 325 FIRs were filed, and 36 arrests were made. Of the arrested persons, 28 hailed from Tamil Nadu. In cyber offences against women, including cyberbullying and morphing, the offending content was quickly removed from social media platforms. In this, 27 arrests were made in non-financial cases, bringing the total number of arrests in 2024 to 63. Seven accused were detained under the Goondas Act for serious and repeated offences, said a press release.
Police said in terms of financial recovery, due to swift police action, Rs.36.63 crore was frozen before they could be misused, and Rs.12.31 crore was successfully reverted to victims’ bank accounts through court orders.
“If the cyber offence is reported immediately in Golden time (within 30 minutes of the offence), the possibility for the recovery of the entire loss amount is high” said a police officer.
