The Ambur Town police arrested three persons for possession of 500 kg of gutka that were packed in 62 gunny bags during a vehicle inspection at Kannigapuram village near Ambur here on Saturday.
The police said that arrested — I. Javeed, 24, S. imtiaz, 22, and Mohammed Akbar, 23 — were residents of Vaniyambadi. Initial inquiry revealed that based on a tip-off, a police team led by Inspector K. Arun Kumar were conducting vehicle inspection at the the checkpost on the Tamil Nadu- Andhra Pradesh border. When they tried to stop a car and a two-wheeler, the vehicles sped past.
The team chased and stopped them around 1 km from the checkpost. Three persons were rounded up and the gutka products were found in the vehicles.
The consignment was smuggled from the interior parts of Karnataka through Krishnagiri district to Tamil Nadu for sale. A case has been registered. Arrested persons were lodged at sub-jail in Tirupattur town.
The police also seized the car and two-wheeler. A probe is under way.
