Organs harvested at Tiruchi govt. hospital help six patients

Organs harvested by a team of surgeons from Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Government Hospital (MGMGH) in Tiruchi from a brain-dead patient helped six persons on Saturday.

According to an official statement, a 28-year-old man from Usilampatti in Madurai district was admitted to the hospital’s emergency department on January 9 morning with a grievous head injury. He was declared braindead the next day, and upon being counselled, the bereaved family agreed to donate his organs.

As per the norms of the Transplant Authority of Tamil Nadu (TRANSTAN), the hospital’s surgeons harvested his liver, kidneys, eyes, and skin tissue. This was the 21st such operation at the hospital.

One of the harvested kidneys was transplanted to a 40-year-old patient who had been undergoing dialysis at the hospital for the past three years. The kidney transplant was the 37th such procedure conducted at the hospital.

Eyes were donated to patients at the hospital. The transplant surgeries done by the MGMGH medical team were successful and the patients were recovering well, said the release.

The other kidney was given to a patient at a city hospital and the liver was sent to a patient at a private hospital in Chennai. The skin tissue was donated to a patient at a private hospital in Madurai.
