Vice-President Jagdeep Dhankhar on Saturday said India’s patent contribution leaves much to be desired in the global perspective.
At the Bharat Electronics Ltd. (BEL) R&D award ceremony, Mr. Dhankhar said: “In the global perspective, our patent contribution leaves much to be desired… Research has to be cutting-edge. Research has to be practical… There is no use having research which goes a little beyond surface sketching.”
On indigenisation, he said it should not be confined to nuts and bolts.
“I have had the occasion to see indigenous components and we are increasingly having equipment that have indigenisation. But are we having engines? Are we having the core material? Are we having that which others want to see from us?… There is no point in being satisfied that we are indigenous when it comes to nuts and bolts. Our aim has to be 100%,” the Vice-President said.
Mr. Dhankhar also visited Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd.–Electronics Division in Bengaluru and addressed officials. He said research and development and innovation must now be the passwords for success.
