Villagers cheering the participants of the maiden traditional boat race in the Bobbarlanka-Amalapuram irrigation canal, at Atreyapuram in Dr .B.R. Ambedkar Konaseema district on Saturday.
As a part of the Sankranti celebrations in Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Konaseema district, Amalapuram Member of Parliament G. Harish Madhur on Saturday flagged off the maiden traditional boat race at the Bobbarlanka-Amalapuram irrigation canal, at Atreyapuram village in Godavari Central Delta.
Three boats, with 10 persons onboard each of them and representing several villages, participated in the race. Several villages in the delta evinced interest to take part in the event in the next two days.
Officials also conducted a swimming competition for the under-15 boys and girls in the same canal. People thronged the venue to witness and encourage both the events.
Addressing the gathering, Mr. Harish Madhur appealed to the people to stay away from rooster fights, and instead participate in the swimming and boat race events to celebrate Sankranti.
Amalapuram MLA Bandaru Satyananda Rao and District Collector R. Mahesh Kumar were among others present.
