There is a mismanagement of waste, particularly in urban areas, which is a concern for researchers, policymakers and the public, observed Gas Authority of India Limited (GAIL) Chief General Manager L.S. Rao.
He participated as the chief guest in the 14th International conference on Sustainable Waste Management and Circular Economy & IPLA Global Forum 2024 closing ceremony at GITAM Deemed to be University here on Saturday.
He emphasised the need for adopting sustainable practices, reducing packaging and avoiding single-use plastics.
Conference Chairman Sadhan Kumar Ghosh said that the conference was started with an initiative to train students on sustainability and waste management with the theme “Catch Them Young”. He said that they trained more than one lakh students to develop circular economy and encourage it in day-to-day life. India is producing 62 million tonnes of waste per year from various sources, he said and urged people to reduce waste and avoid excess consumption.
The speakers discussed waste management in various sectors, including agriculture, construction and textiles. They highlighted the need for recycling and proper waste disposal to reduce environmental pollution.
The Best Paper awards were presented to 45 scholars for their innovative contributions.
