GMKMCH doctors removed a ball-headed pin swallowed by a boy in Salem

The doctors of Government Mohan Kumaramangalam Medical College Hospital (GMKMCH) in Salem successfully removed a ball-headed pin that was swallowed by a boy.

On Tuesday, Selvam (13), a resident of Tharamangalam in Salem district, swallowed the pin accidentally and was admitted to the GMKMCH. The doctor took an X-ray and CT scan of the neck and chest and found a sharp metallic pin (3 cm) in the right terminal segmental bronchus piercing the lung.

Immediately, the patient was taken to the emergency operation theatre for its removal. The team headed by M. Krishnasundari, Head of the Department for ENT, in coordination with anaesthetists, radiologists, and cardiothoracic surgeons, performed the procedure using tele bronchoscopy with optic lens forceps without any complications. The patient recovered well.

On Thursday, GMKMCH Dean Devi Meenal said, “We would like to create awareness among the public through this incident that foreign bodies aspirated in the airway are life-threatening to the children and foreign bodies like this should be kept away from the children. The public shall approach GMKMCH immediately, without getting frustrated or panicking for these types of emergencies,” the Dean added.
