We had previously reported that Tamil superstar Vijay’s son, Jason Sanjay, will make his directorial debut with a film bankrolled by Lyca Productions. On Friday (November 29), the makers of the film announced that the film will star Sundeep Kishan as the lead.
The makers announced the news with a motion poster that features Sundeep and Sanjay sitting around loads of cash inside a library called ‘Indira Library.’
In a statement, GKM Tamil Kumaran of Lyca Productions provided more details about the film’s plot. “Our production house has always strived to encourage good storytellers, and when Jason Sanjay presented the narrative, we felt something fresh and most importantly, it had the USP of drawing Pan-Indian attention. The basic gist revolves around the theme of ‘searching for what you’ve lost in its original place’ — but at what cost? Sundeep Kishen has distantly proved his crowd-pulling calibre in Tamil and Telugu territories. We strongly believe this new collaboration will enthral film enthusiasts with a fresh cinematic experience,” the statement read.
The producer further said that the film will commence shooting by January 2025. With the motion poster, the makers have also announced that the film, tentatively called Jason Sanjay 01, will have music scored by Thaman S and editing by Praveen KL.
Interestingly, Suresh Chandra, the Tamil cinema PRO best known as the manager of Ajith Kumar, has boarded Sanjay’s film as the PRO.
Sanjay’s foray into direction was announced in August 2023, but this is a development that has been in the works ever since Vijay hinted that his son harbours an interest in direction. Sanjay completed his schooling in Chennai and then pursued a Film Production Diploma at Toronto Film School, followed by a BA (Hons) in Screenwriting in London.
The news comes precisely a month after Vijay’s political party Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam held its first State-level conference at Vikravandi in the Villupuram district of Tamil Nadu.
Vijay, who is at the peak of his acting career, debuted as a lead star in the Tamil movie Naalaiya Theerpu in 1992 (directed by his father S.A. Chandrasekhar), years after he first faced the camera as a child actor. His latest movie GOAT grossed over ₹300 crore at the box office within five days of its release. His upcoming film with H Vinoth, tentatively titled Thalapathy 69, will be Vijay’s last outing as an actor.
