The Aminjikarai Police in Chennai have arrested a 37-year-old resident of T. Nagar on charges of repeatedly harassing and threatening to physically harm a 22-year-old woman residing in Aminjikarai.
The City Police said the woman, a student of a coaching academy, has known the accused S. Thirumurugan, a resident of Kannammapet in T. Nagar, for several years. She was a family friend of the accused, who held a post in a political party.
Thirumurugan, a divorcee, has allegedly been harassing the woman to marry him, due to which she left her home in Kodambakkam and began living in a rented accommodation in Aminjikarai, the police said.
According to the police, Thirumurugan recently went to her rented house, and after allegedly abusing her for not agreeing to marry him, he threatened to disfigure her by throwing acid on her.
Based on a complaint filed by the woman, the police registered a case and arrested Thirumurugan under two sections of the Women and Girl Child (Prevention of Atrocities) Act. He was later produced before a judicial magistrate and was lodged in the Puzhal prison.
