Prison warder found dead in Coimbatore

A prison warder attached to the Coimbatore Central Prison was found dead at his quarters on Saturday.

The police said that R. Vikram, 29, of Mettur in Salem district, was found dead at his quarters on Bharathiar Road in the city.

According to the police, Vikram was selected to the post of Grade II prison warder in 2022. He was residing alone at the quarters while his wife, who is pregnant, was in Salem. Vikram was working in the section that handled Prisoners’ Cash Property at the central prison.

As Vikram did not report for duty on Saturday, his colleague tried to reach him over the phone. Since the calls were unanswered, the colleague went to his quarters around 8.45 p.m. and found him dead. He immediately alerted his superiors.

The Race Course police rushed to the spot after being alerted by prison authorities and shifted the body to the Coimbatore Medical College Hospital for post-mortem. The police said the prison warder ended his life, as per preliminary findings. The Race Course police registered a case, based on a complaint lodged by the brother of the deceased.
