Indian films can be understood in a better way by understanding the conditions under which the films are made, said film maker Girish Kasaravalli in Mangaluru on Sunday.

Participating in the discussion on “Techinicality of films” on the concluding day of the two-day Mangaluru Lit Fest, Mr. Kasaravalli said films of Satyajit Ray are inspired by Bengali renaissance and it can be understood if viewer has understanding of Bengal renaissance. Similarly Shantharam’s films can be understood if viewer has knowledge about nationalist movement..

The Malayalam films can be understood if there is knowledge of left movement and Kannada films can be understood if there is knowledge of socialist movement, Mr. Kasaravalli said.

Films, Mr. Kasaravalli said, are no longer just an audio visual medium. Film directors use literature, music and visual dimensions of art forms to realistically present the story. “A film can be understood in a better way if reviwer understands reasons for, namely, slow pace or fast pace of the film.”

Every 10 years, he said, the approach to film and it’s elements changes. Close up shots have gone and there are wide angle shots in films. As art aesthetics are changing, it is difficult to comprehend today’s cinema, Mr. Kasaravalli observed.
