A day after the AIADMK opted out, BJP State president K. Annamalai on Sunday announced that the National Democratic Alliance (NDA), led by his party, would also boycott the Erode (East) bypoll scheduled for February 5.

“The Assembly election in 2026 would be the one that would remove the DMK [from power]. The NDA is proceeding in that direction,” Mr. Annamalai said in a statement.

Claiming that the people were restricted like “cattle” in a “barn” during the bypoll for the same Assembly constituency held in 2023, Mr. Annamalai charged that people were “tortured”.

The BJP leader alleged that the DMK violated the Model Code of Conduct and further said the NDA did not wish for the people to be restricted like cattle yet again.

The DMK government was functioning against the ideals of the architect of the Constitution B.R. Ambedkar and that the people had to undergo the struggles under the government, he said.

During the past four years, corruption was rampant in government departments , and law and order was deteriorating. There was unemployment and no safety for women and children, he charged.
