Member of Parliament for Mysuru, Yaduveer Krishnadatta Chamaraja Wadiyar, inaugurated the National Farmers’ Day here on Monday.

The Federation of State Farmers’ Organisations and the Karnataka Rajya Raitha Sangha (Raitha faction) jointly organised the farmers’ day at the Town Hall here to mark the birth anniversary of former Prime Minister Chaudhary Charan Singh. Farmers from various parts of the State gathered to be part of the celebration. They reached the venue in bullock carts. The MP also joined the farmers and took a bullock cart ride.

Farmers decked up the premises to create a festive atmosphere. The statue circle was decorated with plantain and mango leaves. Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Wadiyar spoke about various programmes launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi for the welfare of farmers in the country.

He said the farmers’ empowerment has been one of the key agendas of the Vikshit Bharat envisioned by the Prime Minister.

Under the Kisan Samman Yojana, the government has been providing quality sowing seeds and fertilisers that help to improve soil fertility, soil testing, and drip irrigation. Farm research centres have also been established to support agricultural progress, he said.

Expressing concern over the erosion of soil fertility due to excessive use of fertilisers for ginger cultivation, he said there is a need to safeguard soil fertility and advised farmers to make use of neem compost..

KRRS (Raitha faction) President Ingalaguppe Krishne Gowda expressed displeasure over politicians not attending the farmers’ day event. “We had invited the political leaders, including the Chief Minister. But none of them attended the programme. They have not addressed the farmers’ problems.”

He announced that the next year’s farmers’ day will be observed in Belagavi. He said that the government should observe the National Farmers’ Day. “We are called the backbone of the country. Farmers produce food for the people, and they should always be remembered. In this regard, the government must come forward to celebrate Farmers’ Day” he said.

A procession was taken out from Gun House Circle to the Palace.
