Residents should participate in initiatives to increase green cover and restore water bodies, says Mayor R.Priya

Chennai Corporation has asked residents to participate in initiatives to increase green cover and restore water bodies in residential localities, said Mayor R.Priya.

Participating in the street music festival in Thiruvanmiyur beach on Sunday, Ms.Priya said the street music festival has been organised to motivate residents to support projects that increase green cover and restore waterbodies.

Pointing to the directions of Chief Minister M.K.Stalin to improve green cover, Ms.Priya said planting of one crore palmyra trees has started along the beaches. “The campaign Live Green, Love Blue has been launched in the city to create awareness among residents in each of the localities. Residents’ support is crucial for the success of every campaign. Residents have been requested to support initiatives such as roof gardening. Young volunteers have been requested to support the tree planting drive. All participants in the event will get seed balls to increase tree cover in their neighbourhood,” she said.

Chennai Corporation has planted three lakh trees in three years. The civic body has also restored 240 water bodies, the Mayor said.
