Noon meal union criticises govt. move to hire cooks on consolidated pay

Various employees’ unions have criticised the State government’s move to appoint 8,997 cooking assistants on the basis of consolidated pay of ₹3,000 per month under the Puratchi Thalaivar MGR Nutritious Noon Meal Scheme.

According to the government order, every noon meal centre has an organiser, cook and a cooking assistant. As many as 8,997 cook assistants’ vacant posts will be filled to run the scheme smoothly by February 2025.

The Tamil Nadu Government Employees Union (TNGEU) considers it a betrayal of trust that this government is trying to appoint employees on consolidated pay as a way of deceiving the employees by accepting them as additional workload in only half of the total posts available, said the TNGEU in a release.

Speaking about the move, president of Noon Meal Employees Association Palanisami said that the move is an eyewash. “The government must pay proper wages and deliver on its election promise of pension too”. The employees’ unions have planned to stage a State-wide protest on December 27.
