Following all NMC rules, says APMC Registrar

Andhra Pradesh Medical Council Registrar I. Ramesh has maintained that the council has followed all the rules stipulated under the National Medical Commission with regard to the issuance of Permanent Registrations (PRs) to Foreign Medical Graduates (FMGs) in Andhra Pradesh.

In response to a story titled ‘Doctors of a Lesser State’, published in The Hindu on December 20, Dr. Ramesh referred to a Kerala High Court judgment that upheld the Kerala State Medical Council’s (KSMC) notification mandating two-year internship to students who missed their classes.

In the letter, Dr. Ramesh said the present scenario of withholding the process of issuing PRs to some students is as per the NMC guidelines issued in November and December 2023, which say that some FMGs “have to do their internships for one more year as they could not compensate their online period of study with offline clinical training”. He added that NMC also insists on one year clerkship as the “students lacked proper training”.

Pointing out that APMC cannot disregard NMC notifications, Dr. Ramesh said the students, belonging to the group that did not properly compensate their online study, are pressuring the APMC and the government for PRs.
