The Communist Party of India (Marxist) [CPI(M)] Thiruvananthapuram district conference has passed resolutions urging the Union and State governments to expedite work on a number of critical infrastructure projects in the district including the Vizhinjam-Navayikulam ring road, Karamana-Kaliyikkavila national highway development, and the expansion of the Vattiyoorkavu junction.
The district conference urged the Union government to urgently begin work on the Vizhinjam-Navayikulam ring road given its importance to the needs of the Vizhinjam seaport project. The ring road project was conceived to handle the largescale container movement that would materialise once the port becomes fully operational. The district conference blamed the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) of dragging its feet on the project citing technicalities.
Linking Vizhinjam to Navayikulam, the 45-metre-wide ring road is designed to cover 54 km across 24 villages.
The CPI(M) conference urged the State government to speed up the development of the Karamana-Kaliyikkavila stretch of the National Highway. The land needed for completing the work on an 18-km stretch from Vazhimukku to Kaliyikkavila should be acquired at the earliest.
Expansion
In another resolution, the conference urged the State government to speed up work on scientifically redesigning the Muthalappozhi fishing harbour. The district conference also passed a resolution urging the Left Democratic Front government to complete the expansion of the Vattiyoorkavu junction during its term.
The development of this junction is critical to easing traffic snarls in the thickly-populated Vattiyoorkavu region, the conference noted.
The district conference also passed resolutions slamming the Governor’s actions with regard to universities in Kerala, and seeking a lasting solution to the human-wildlife conflicts in the eastern regions of the State.
