According to the initial medical bulletin released by the hospital, the diagnosis is heart failure and is receiving intensive medical support, to optimize cardiac function and stabilize vital parameters.

Forest Minister A.K. Saseendran said doctors treating Vasudevan Nair at a private hospital in Kozhikode would issue a medical bulletin later in the day.

Speaking to reporters outside the hospital, Mr. Saseendran said, “Kerala anxiously awaited the latest news on the iconic writer. Let the doctors say the pluses and minuses. There is no space for any speculation. We should all pray for Mr. Nair’s well-being,” he said.

Earlier, Tourism Minister Muhammad Riyaz visited Mr. Nair at the hospital and told reporters in Kozhikode that “doctors were doing whatever they could” to restore him to health.

Mr. Nair was under intensive care treatment at the hospital after he was admitted with congestive heart failure earlier.  A multi-disciplinary board of doctors were treating him.

For decades, Mr. Nair has been the presiding deity of Malayalam fiction. With his formidable contemporaries, O.V. Vijayan and Madhavi Kutty (Kamala Das) gone, M.T. remains unchallenged as the lone superstar of Malayalam letters.
