The Nagercoil Municipal corporation is set to restore the major parks in the city that have not undergone any restoration in recent years.

The corporation has submitted a proposal for the restoration and establishment of a science centre in Sir C.P. Ramasamy Iyer Memorial Park in Veppamoodu Junction and development of a new park at Semmankulam in Avvai Shanmugam Road in Nagercoil.

Semmankulam, which spans over 40 acres, has been severely damaged due to contamination of sewage water and growth of water hyacinths for the past few years. Residents and environmental activists have persistently raised complaints about the need to protect and restore the water body.

In response, a monitoring team from Kanniyakumari district visited the site. Following the visit, an evaluation for a renovation plan was prepared with an estimated cost of ₹10 crore and submitted to the State government.

Nagercoil Corporation Mayor R. Mahesh said the project aimed to transform the area into a small picnic destination for the public. The park would be developed around the water body with an island structure to be created in the middle for people to visit. A bamboo bridge would be constructed to connect the shore to the island.

A Detailed Project Report (DPR) had been submitted for both projects, he said and warned of strict action against those discharging wastewater into the tank. Residents were being advised to install drainage systems to prevent wastewater from flowing into the tank, he added.
