A man taken into custody in a case registered under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act (POCSO) managed to escape from the lock-up at Aluva East police station on Friday (December 21) midnight triggering a manhunt.
The accused, Isaac, 23, was reportedly tracked down to Mookkannoor near Angamaly and recaptured on Saturday. He was booked for the alleged sexual harassment of a minor girl and was detained in the cell to be produced before a magistrate when he escaped by midnight.
Reportedly, the cell was not locked, and the accused sneaked out when the officer on guard duty went to meet other policemen who had arrived at the station. He allegedly opened the latch by slipping his hand through the iron bars and then made his way to the second floor, from where he managed to escape.
The police have launched an internal inquiry into the incident. The accused will also be charged for escaping lawful confinement.
